If you have ever stood in the skincare aisle reading words like natural, clean, botanical, organic, plant-based, and thought, “Okay...but what does any of this actually mean?” you’re not alone.
Skincare labels can be a LOT. You just wanted to shop for a new moisturizer, and suddenly you’re trying to decipher words and phrases like it’s your full-time job.
And while plenty of those words on the label can tell you something about how a brand formulates its products, there is one seal that is actually backed by federal standards: USDA Organic. And Honey Girl Organics happens to have it!
So, let’s decode it together and make your next skincare shopping trip a bit more fun and a lot less like doing homework.
Not all “Organic” Claims are Created Equal
A brand cannot simply ‘decide’ it qualifies for USDA Organic certification and put the seal on a product.
That seal represents a regulated standard, and there are a few important things happening behind it:
1. A brand can’t certify itself.
USDA Organic certification comes through an independent, USDA-accredited certifying agent. In other words, saying “we’re organic!” and actually being certified organic are two very different things.
When you do see the USDA Organic seal, flip the product over and look for the words “Certified by,” followed by the name of its certifying agent. That small detail confirms an accredited organization behind the seal that verifies the product’s organic claims.
This is where reading AND understanding the label comes into play. Don’t fall for keywords without looking for the proof behind them.
2. The finished product matters.
A formula can contain certified organic ingredients without the entire finished product being USDA Organic Certified. Seeing “organic aloe” or “organic jojoba oil” on an ingredient list doesn’t automatically mean the moisturizer itself is certified organic.
If you’re looking for a product that’s actually USDA Certified Organic, look for the seal. For a finished product to be labeled “organic” under USDA standards, at least 95% of its ingredients must be certified organic, excluding water and salt.
That’s a whole lot different than simply having a few organic ingredients sprinkled into the formula.

3. There have to be receipts, honey!
Certification requires documentation that follows certified ingredients through sourcing, receiving, storage, production, packaging, labeling, and all the way to the finished product.
Basically, USDA Organic is more than pretty words on pretty packaging. Independent verification and a paper trail back to that tiny green seal, which feels pretty mighty now that you know what’s behind it!
Try this on the next skincare product you pick up, or grab one that’s already in your routine:
Read the packaging and play beauty detective for 30 seconds.
1. What is the product actually claiming?
Does it say “natural”? “Made with organic ingredients”? Or does it display the USDA Organic seal?
2. Is the finished product certified?
An individual ingredient being organic is different from the complete formula meeting USDA certification requirements. Remember that 95% we just talked about!
3. Can you verify it?
You can search USDA-certified operations through the USDA Organic Integrity Database. A transparent brand should make its certification easy to investigate, not something you simply have to trust.
Suddenly, that label tells you a whole lot more now.
Why Honey Girl Organics chose certification
At Honey Girl Organics, we believe organic claims should come with proof, not empty promises.
We’ve been certified organic since 2011, and our eligible certified products and operations are independently evaluated against USDA organic requirements.
Maintaining certification means continued documentation, traceability, review, and inspection year after year. It’s not a badge we earned years ago and stopped thinking about. It’s an ongoing standard for how we operate day to day and how we make the skincare that ends up in your hands and on your skin. When you’re choosing products to become part of your daily routine, we think knowing what’s actually inside them matters!
And here’s our favorite part: you can actually check our work AND our word.
Our current certificate and USDA operation profile are available for anyone who wants to look deeper. You don’t have to take our word for it. You can see the proof for yourself.
Because skincare is personal. You should be able to understand what you’re buying, ask better questions, and know when a claim has something real standing behind it.
So, the next time a product tells you it’s “organic,” don’t stop at the front of the bottle.
Flip it over. Look for the seal. Read the label. Check the certification. Be curious, be informed.
Your skincare label has a story to tell. Now you know how to read it!
