The Moldy Mistake That Taught Me How to Care for Organic Skincare

The Moldy Mistake That Taught Me How to Care for Organic Skincare

I’ll be honest. When I first saw mold in my organic skincare, I absolutely panicked. I was using the Face & Eye Crème that had quickly become one of my favorite products. I loved the instant results, the smell, the feel, and the wholesome, organic ingredients.

Until one morning, about two months in, I opened the jar and gasped out loud.

There it was. A fuzzy green spot of mold was growing right on top of the product I loved so dearly.

My first thought? “How could this happen?”

My second? “Is it the product's fault?!”

This was long before I worked with Honey Girl. So, I reached out to customer service and explained what had happened. They were incredibly kind, quick to respond, and extremely informative.

It turns out the problem wasn’t with the product. It wasn’t a bad jar or an expired expiration date.

Are you ready for it?

The problem was me.

This was nearly a decade ago, right when I had made the switch to all-organic skincare. Before that, I had tried every fad, every magazine recommendation, and bought whatever promised otherworldly results from the big box stores.

Spoiler alert: none of those were organic. Most were loaded with long lists of chemicals and synthetic preservatives.

When I got my hands on this golden jar of Face & Eye Crème, it was my first true experience with real, organic skincare, and I learned a hard lesson. I had been dipping into the product with semi-wet hands. I would wash my face, barely dry my hands off, and scoop right in without thinking twice. The products I used before never molded because they were preserved within an inch of their life.

However, when you’re working with natural, food-grade ingredients like those in Honey Girl Organics products, even a small amount of water can disrupt the delicate balance of the formula. Just a few droplets can create the kind of moist environment mold thrives in.

Since we don’t use synthetic preservatives which are known to be harsh, irritating, and harmful to your skin, your care and intention become an essential part of keeping your skincare fresh and safe!

Lesson.

Learned.

Nowadays? I always use extra dry hands or the small wooden spatula that comes with each moisturizer, keep my jars tightly sealed, and store them in a cool, dry place. Honey Girl Organics products are made with real, active, and nourishing ingredients, which means they require a little extra care to stay fresh.

If you’re using clean skincare, take it from me. Don’t skip the dry hands and remember to handle the formulas with care. That tiny moment of intention makes all the difference and keeps your products safe, clean, and effective to the very last scoop!

P.S. Would you LOVE it if we offered extra applicator spatulas with your orders? We know it’s such an important part of keeping things clean, and they also help re-stir the natural ingredients when some separation occurs (which is totally normal with real, raw ingredients).

Let us know, we’re always listening!

Love,

Ashley & Honey Girl Organics
