How to Heal a Sunburn Naturally (And Keep It from Happening Again!)

How to Heal a Sunburn Naturally (And Keep It from Happening Again!)

Summer is all about chasing that golden kiss from the sun, but what happens when you get a little too much? Redness, heat, pain, and eventually...peeling. Here’s your guide to before and after sun care to keep your skin healthy, your summer plans on schedule, and quick healing in sight!

Before the Burn...

1. Remember To Hydrate

The truth is that healthy skin is resilient skin. When you make sure you're staying well-hydrated throughout the day, especially in hot, humid weather when you're sweating a lot, you’re already giving your skin the support it needs before you even apply a product.

2. Build a Morning Routine

Before stepping outdoors for the day, make sure you're keeping up with your skincare routine. Need a quick summer guide on which products to use? Read up here! After that, layer on a natural, mineral-based sunscreen, like our Protect stick. Formulas like this, made with zinc oxide, physically block harmful rays without harsh chemicals or synthetic ingredients.

3. Dress for the Day

Sometimes sun prevention is as simple as wearing a hat or packing a light long-sleeve top, like cotton. If you're beach-bound or poolside ready, grabbing a spot with an umbrella is a quick trick for giving your skin a break from direct rays.

4. Keep Mist on Hand

We love our versatile Facial Toner because it’s a body and face mist that you can spray all over. Skin drying out? Fix it fast with a few spritzes of Facial Toner and carry on with your day. It’s great for cooling down skin, adding back moisture, or just giving yourself a refresh between activities.

Want to add a light floral scent to your summer memories? Opt for our Rose Toner!

After the Sun: Natural Sunburn Remedies That Actually Work

Followed your pre-sun plan but still caught a little too much sun? These calming, cooling remedies are here to soothe and restore your skin quickly.

1. Aloe Vera

Straight from the plant is best. Split open a fresh aloe vera leaf and apply the gel directly to your burn for instant cooling relief!

2. Raw Honey

Nature’s humectant, raw honey, helps draw moisture into the skin while delivering healing benefits. Apply a thin layer to burned areas, leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse gently with cool water.

3. Not Into DIY Methods?

We’ve got you. Our After Sun Face & Body Lotion is here, and it’s packed with the same ingredients as the DIY methods above. So, you can skip keeping an aloe plant on hand or reaching for sticky honey when you're just trying to heal.

Tips for Healing Sunburn Quickly

  • Shield your skin from the sun in the days that follow. As long as it’s still red or sensitive, continue to avoid sun exposure!
  • Apply your After Sun Face & Body Lotion up to two or three times a day to prevent peeling and support healing.
  • Opt for lukewarm showers. Cold water can shock the skin, and hot water will only make it worse. A lukewarm shower is your best bet to soothe without irritation.
  • After your shower, gently pat your skin dry. No rubbing! Use soft patting motions to support your skin barrier as it repairs.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing fabric that doesn't rub or cling to the skin while it's healing.
  • Use your Facial Toner as a body mist in between lotion applications to keep skin calm, hydrated, and nourished.
  • Drink your water! Hydration is just as important after sun exposure as it is before. Sunburned skin needs internal water to heal most efficiently.

Let this summer be the season of healthy skin and caring for it the right way. If you catch a burn, don’t let it ruin your plans. Follow these tips to get your skin back on track!

With love,

Ashley & Honey Girl Organics
