Which HGO Products Are Best For My Skin Type?

Which HGO Products Are Best For My Skin Type?

by Tiffany Shelton

One of the most common questions customers ask our representatives is, “if I have X skin type, can I use Y product?” At Honey Girl Organics, we have over 20 products and 1,000,000 combinations for using them! Go ahead, ask Google how many combinations can be made with 20 items. We’ll wait...

Yes. Over a million possible routines can be done with just our skincare line. We’re so lucky to have dedicated representatives that will work with your skin to figure out which product or combination of products is right for you.

However, if you don’t feel like chatting with someone, we’ve made a (sorta) definitive guide. Keep reading to see why it’s sorta.

What’s my skin type?

Before we get into products, we need to know what your skin is like. Let’s go over a variety of skin types and how you can tell which one is yours.

Oily Skin

This type of skin is characterized by a “shiny face”. If you tend to notice that your skin is shiny an hour after a shower, without any moisturizer, then you may have oily skin. Other symptoms of oily skin include:

  • Clogged Pores
  • Noticeable Breakouts
  • Blackheads
  • Makeup doesn’t seem to stay on

Dry Skin

Seemingly the opposite of oily skin, dry skin can be characterized by a tightness. You may feel like you need a moisturizer to feel comfortable in your skin. Here are some other symptoms:

  • Itchiness
  • Flakes or peeling
  • Fine lines or cracks
  • Grayish color

“Normal” Skin

We put this in quotations because we have not heard anyone say that they have “normal” skin. What is normal anyway? According to dermatologists, it is a balance of oil and dry throughout the day. Never to oily and never to dry. It seems to be an incredibly rare skin type. Symptoms:

  • You’ve gone through life hearing people say “What moisturizer do you use?” And you reply, “I don’t use any!” Congratulations, you’ve won the skin lottery.

Acne-Prone Skin

You don’t need oily skin to have acne-prone skin. Natural oil actually protects the skin from dirt and debris. Acne-prone skin is often determined by the regularity of acne and not necessarily the amount. If you had a huge breakout, but only once in the last six months, then you may not have acne-prone skin. If you know that a breakout is coming about once a month or so often, as though on a schedule, then you are acne-prone. Other symptoms:

  • Itchiness or Redness
  • Clogged Pores/Blackheads
  • Acne appearing in the same area of skin often

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is defined by its reactivity. This skin usually reacts quickly and harshly to weather, sun, and products. People with sensitive skin will find themselves looking at labels often to avoid common ingredients. If you suffer from sensitive skin, the best thing would be to visit your doctor or dermatologist to get more insight into your specific sensitivities.

Symptoms of Sensitive Skin Common Ingredients to Avoid:

  • Redness
  • Essential Oils and Extracts
  • Itchiness
  • Chemicals and Dyes
  • Sunburns Easily
  • Sulfates (Ammonium Lauryl, Sodium Daryl)
  • Prone to acne, eczema, rosacea, etc.
  • Alcohol
  • Sudden swelling
  • Fragrances

Combination Skin

Probably the most common skin type, 'combination' literally means a combination of the above skin types. I personally have this skin type. I have oily skin on my face and deathly dry skin on my scalp. As the largest organ on your body, the skin is the first defense of the body. Therefore, it may change depending on its location and depending on external factors. For instance, you could have sweaty palms but not sweat a drop elsewhere. Maybe for the cool part of the year, your skin is as dry as the desert but in the summer moist like a swimming pool. It really depends, and you are the best judge of your skin.

I know my type. Which products should I use?

Now, this is where the sorta comes in. The skin is a constantly changing organ. There are so many factors that can affect it, that your product needs may change. Factors include weather, sun exposure, changing seasons, stress levels, nutrition levels, hydration levels, a woman’s period/pregnancy/menopause, and illnesses and diseases. It’s so much to keep track of and I feel my own stress increasing as I think about it. But over time, like anything else, you get to know what you need better if you keep at it. If you are having problematic skin issues and aren’t sure where to start, I suggest adding one extra glass of water a day.

That’s it.

Once you’re used to the routine of drinking extra water, add an extra salad a week. Then maybe try a moisturizer or scrub. Take things slowly. Get to know yourself like you’re in a relationship. Over time you’ll learn things about yourself you never knew, and feel a whole new kind of intimacy that you can only have with yourself.

So based on your skin and body type, what products would you use? We love hearing from you! Let us know in the comments or shoot us an email 😉
