What We Saw When We Committed to Dry Brushing for 30 Days

As one of the writers for Honey Girl Organics, I love taking on new trends or experiments and testing them out before I dive into writing about them. This experiment was no different. I committed to 30 days of dry brushing to see what all the hype was about.

Was it worth it? Or was it just another trend splashed all over social media?

Well, I am now 45 days in, and I can confidently say you will never catch me skipping my dry brushing ritual!

The benefits I saw from this quick at-home self-care routine were pretty incredible. Before I discuss all my results, I want to remind readers that everyone’s reaction to new skincare protocols is different, so what I experienced may not be the same for you.

Now that we have that disclaimer, let’s get to the good stuff!

The benefits I saw immediately:

  • Softer skin! I am talking baby smooth skin from head to toe.
  • Fewer dry patches. My elbows and knees became more even in skin tone and noticeably less dry than before.
  • If you self-tan at home, you are going to love this one. Dry brushing before applying self-tanner made my at-home tanning process look like a professional had done it. Even coverage, no streaks, no dry spots that turned darker, and a longer-lasting tan thanks to the exfoliation beforehand.

The benefits I saw after committing to the full 30 days:

  • More toned skin, yes, really! My skin appeared tauter and more toned.

How to Get Started

You do not need much to begin, just a natural-bristle brush. You can find them at your local grocery store or beauty store, so pick the one that feels right for you and start this skin-loving ritual!

Here’s how:

Always start with dry skin before your shower or bath.

Begin at your feet and work your way upward, brushing toward your heart in long, smooth strokes.

Be gentle. Your skin should feel invigorated but never sore. If you are fair skinned like I am, you will notice slight redness afterward. This is simply blood flow coming to the surface, not a sign that you were too rough.

The entire practice takes just 3 to 5 minutes. Afterward, hop into the shower or bath to rinse away dead skin cells. Do not skip this step!

How Often

Two to three times a week is ideal, though once a week may be enough if your skin is more sensitive. I personally found it so soothing that I dry-brushed almost every day during my 30-day experiment. From my research, you cannot really overdo it, so listen to your skin and see what feels best for you.

Some precautions: Do not dry brush if you are sunburned, have a new tattoo, or if your skin is experiencing a flare-up of any kind. This could further irritate the skin. As with most beauty practices, listen to your body and let it guide you.
